The In Between

Good morning Subscriber First Name,

It’s a weird in-between season in Montana right now. Winter swept into town for a few days in October, then receded again to let fall’s glory linger for a moment longer. She arrives in the night to frost the ground, then flits away to let snow seep into parched soil.

My work these days seems to mirror the moodiness of the season, coming in stops and starts. Patience has never been my strongest suit, but I’m trying to learn from the in between. Maybe the in between is where the real work happens—the little moments that add up to a lifetime. In the meantime—in the in between— may I release expectation and be present to whatever the season(s) hold(s).

Townsend’s Solitaires are out and about in southwestern Montana right now. I’ve seen them recently on the south-facing trails in the Bridger Foothills. In the winter, Townsend’s Solitaires switch from eating insects to fruit, particularly juniper berries. Listen for their distinctive cheerful song (or you can hear it online here).
